February’s Quick Reviews (Children’s Book Edition)

Hello guys! It’s time to dive in to some newly released and upcoming children’s books that matters. It seems that these books (and I hope all books) have the same goal: to point them to Christ. There different approaches done by each books here that(spoiler!) they all deserve a high flying score of 5 (which is the highest). So let’s look at each one and if you like my reviews, please purchase these books. Another reminder is, there are free downloads which serves as extra stuff from the books published by The Good Book Company.

My First ABC Book of Bible Verses (Jonathan Gibson and Mike Mullan, New Growth Press) Make My First ABC Book of Bible Verses first on the list of books that your kids will dive into. The words that represent the A to Z  here are not the usual ones. The words here are part of a Bible verse that touches different topics that points to God. The verses are short just enough for the kids to read or memorize and you can say some kudos to the author on how he picked out those passages. So passages are familiar and some are not but you’ll be glad the author included them here.

There is a very short explanation on each words that really captures the essence of what the verse is about. The doctrines that you might find difficult are written for easy digestion for the young mind. If you can’t find the right words to tell some essential truths to a child, then this is a helpful book. The artworks are vibrant and creatively connects with the letter and the word they represents. Definitely kids will gravitate towards these eye candies. This is the first serving of a new book series called Big Truths for Little Minds and it’s already a banger. So let’s keep out eyes peeled for the second book of the series.

Jesus Moments: David (Alison Mitchell and Noah Warnes, The Good Book Company)Christ is in every page of the Bible. You might have heard that through sermons, conferences or books as an adult. Great idea! All of the Bible is pointing to God’s only Son on who we want our kids to go to specially in salvation. We don’t want them to miss that point like what Matt Chandler’s sermon rebuking our modern evangelical interpretation of David and Goliath episode. It’s not about you or your problem. It’s all about Jesus. But how can we tell this to our small wonders without turning it into a “Where’s Waldo?” book? This new book from Alison Mitchell fits the bill! Well it has a itsy bitsy searching game but that’s not the main point and it’s not included without any reason. I know there had been books that has this kind of theme, but if you and your kids dive to this book or by reading the title alone, you know that it’s a pretty straight forward and direct that will hit the target.

I like how the author re-tells the David vs. Goliath story, then added some essential parts of the life of David without rushing things and ending up as a montage goop. You’ll enjoy the story before you get to the part were the author gives the places where the special crown is spotted. It’s a pretty cool springboard to the last part of the book which David and Jesus is compared, and points further to the cross and the gospel. Pretty neat! Thumbs up for the execution and how the author clearly explains contents of the final pages of the book. As for the art, Noah Warnes illustrations perfectly fit this book. There are some wow moments especially when Mitchell shows the similarities of both David and Jesus. Repeating scenes featuring David replacing it with Jesus are amazingly superb.

Like My First ABC Book of Bible Verses, this is the initial serving of this new series Jesus Moments from The Good Book Company and it’s really good.

The God Contest, Board Book (Carl Laferton and Catalina Echeverri, The Good Book Company) – Finally is this board book with the dynamic duo of Laferton and Echeverri, based on the award winning storybook with the same name. I haven’t read the storybook version of this one but I assume that it’s more lengthy (and more art) in content. I think this is one of the example that I can give that has the same approach with the second book in this review. Although, Jesus Moments: David laid it out clear and straight forward, this new book from Laferton and Echeverri has it’s own thing to in pointing Elijah to Jesus Christ, that is enjoyable and understandable for the target audience. Laferton knows the language of toddlers and the choice of words will stick in either reading to your little ones or they’re the ones who are reading the book. Short but impactful. As for the illustration, Echeverri did what she do best: give kids something that will make their imagination run wild. Like Laferton, she works is limited because of the format of the book. Nevertheless, her illustrations on this book is boundless, specially the one when the God of the Bible proves He is the real God. Of course the essential part of this book is leading kids to Christ, that he is the real God. That transition is a good one. Finishing off the book, a simple interactive thing will help kids see the important lesson of the book.
