7 Great Truths About The Church

When you hear the word “church”, what things come to your mind? Is it a building, crosses, people praying or weddings? Looking to the Scripture we can the a definitive answer to what the church is. This list provides some essentials of the identity of the church.

The church is us– (Acts 2:41, Eph. 3: 9-11) a group of Christ followers saved by grace through faith alone. Not a building or denomination. The church is the people in a church building or a particular denomination. The Greek work for it is‘ekklesia” which means called out. That means God called us from the world by the preaching of the gospel to be His child, to live by God’s glory, to have fellowship with other believers and reach out the lost for Christ sake.

The church is indestructible– Jesus declared in Matt. 16: 18 “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” No one even the ‘gates of hell’ can halt God’s movement. It’s unstoppable! And let me add, (Sorry no sorry to Mormonism and Jehovah’s Witnesses) no total apostasy!

The church is where God appointed us to worship Him and serve fellow believers (Act 2: 42-47 and 2 Cor. 9:1-15). The early church prays and break bread not individual but by group. The church is by means a team effort to glorify the living God and reflect the image of Christ to this dying world.

The church is where God dispense His spiritual gifts (1Co 12:28 and Eph. 11-13)- We edify one another in different means by the gifts The Holy Spirit bestows to us. All of us have a purpose and work that was set before us by God (Eph. 2: 10). We advance God’s work here on earth using the diversity of gifts that helps the ministry uplift the saints and lead unbelievers to the saving work of Christ.

The church is commissioned by God to share the gospel and disciple– Matthew28: 19-20 states the “Great Commision” for believers: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” As a Christian bought by the blood of Christ, have you shared the gospel today?

The church can’t save you– Salvation belongs to Jesus Christ and to Him alone (Acts 4: 12, Eph. 2: 8-9, Romans 10:9-13 and Romans 5:1-2). Church is where the redeemed are. God never appoints the church to save people nor tells people to be saved they must enter the church (through membership, baptism, etc). Rather, God commissioned the church to tell the world the gospel (Matt.28:19) that can save them. Have you accepted the church to save you or the good news that really saves?

The church should not be neglected (Heb. 10:25) – Chick-Fil-A a popular food chain in America closes its US wide stores on Sunday so that its employees can worship God. They live by a Christian principle that the only success is by glorifying God. That includes giving time for Him on Sunday. As a Christian, do you give time for God? Do you attend church services and fellowship with other believers?
