Teachers Can Make an Impact
I once read a T-Shirt that somewhat reads “Teacher’s Makes Impact to a Student for Eternity”. Indeed, teachers does have that ability. They are the ones that build up a person that will also make an impact to others. Do you remember your teachers in elementary and high school? What kind of teachers do you remember that really did influenced you? Is he the kind one or the terror you dont want to attend the class? Who ever he or she is, you should be thankful because of that teacher, you were able to read this article.
Speaking of teachers, Galatians 3:24 states that the law (specially the 10 Commandments) is a teacher (schoolmaster or tutor in other Bible translations) that leads us to Christ. Without this law we will not know that we sin against God (Romans 7: 7-13). Have we examined ourselves in the light of the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20). Are you good enough for heaven? Have you lied? Took something that doesnt belong to you? You’re a thief if you have done that. Have you been angry with someone? According to Matthew 5, Jesus says thats murder. Thats only 3 of the 10 Commandments which is enough for God to punish us. And the punishment of our sins is eternity in hell.
The 10 Commandments of God serves as a mirror to see our filthiness (sins) and it also says that we should come to Jesus to wash us clean. God is holy and we cannot come to Him because of our sins. But being merciful, God made a way so that we can come to Him by sending Jesus Christ to save us (Juan 3:16). Doing good works, being charitable, having baptized and being a member of a church wont make us righteous to God. If we insist in doing that to be accepted by God, we are like a criminal trying to bribe a good judge. Only through the blood of Jesus Christ he shed in Calvary can wash our sins. Why not repent and trust in Jesus today (Efeso 2:8-9, Romans 10:13) and receive His free gift of salvation? Call on Him today and He will save you.

Book Review: Who’s Afraid of Giant Goliath? by Jojie Wong and Leo Kempis Ang

You might have read books on David defeating Goliath many times but it wont hurt to have another re-telling that Bible story released by Hiyas. Jojie Wong rekindle the fire of an awesome story of courage and having faith in God. I enjoyed the storytelling of Jojie Wong. She puts some freshness and excitement to it. While Leo Kempis Ang puts some of his talent on this book bringing out so comic-bookish style artwork.
This book will capture the imagination of children as they can relate to David. They will be encourage to face their own “Goliath” in life. Help kids strengthen their faith by giving this book.

Book Review: Ang Paglalakbay ni Butirik (Butirik’s Journey) by A. C. Balmes and Kora B. Albano

Reading “Butirik’s Journey” reminds me of two things: Disney’s “Cars” movie and our family owning a jeepney. If only our jeep can talk he might also say what Butirik feels. A. C. Balmes handled the story impressively. You’ll have an array of emotions both for and of Butirik as he goes through his problem.

This Palanca award winning book will take you high above the sky and down deep in the sea of discovery. “Butirik’s Journey” is not just discovering the place you’ll fit in or finding acceptance from people but discovering who you really are. The book ends with a suprise trasformation of Butirik.

Book Review: Signal Number 3 by Dr. Luis P. Gatmaitan MD and Jether Amar

A story that is so near to the heart of every Filipinos who experience typhoon. Yani and his family depicts how Pinoys going through the storm and how they survive with hope in their hearts. Tito Dok didnt just gave a informative guide for kids (and adults) in preparing for the bad weather but injects suspense which makes this book a page turner. Jether Amar captured the drama as he renders his talent in this book.

Kids will be challenged with this book as they learn to prepare for a typhoon and see what they can expect in the aftermath. Holding on to God in the midst of a calamity is also highlighted in this book.

Book Review: Teka! Ang Labo ng Aking Mata (Wait! I Can’t See Clearly) by Dr. Luis P. Gatmaitan MD and Al Estrella

Lirio has a problem. She cant see clearly. From school to her home, her myopia is giving her a hard time. What will she do? Read this latest installment of “Mga Kuwento ni Tito Dok” as Lirio and her family family find solution to her eye problem.
The Tito Dok and Teacher Al tandem in this book is absolutely brilliant. I’m a fan of Al Estrella’s clay artworks and you’ll be one too after reading this book. His artwork here are amazing. The wit and humor of Teacher Al through his clay illustrations has a life of its own in this book. Well it didnt overshadow the wit and humor of Tito Dok’s story, rather both are complimentary. Thats why this is a fun read! All in all this is one informative and entertaining book kids would love to read over and over.

Book Review: Oh Mateo! Crying Children by Grace D. Chong and Beth Parrocha Doctolero

Gadong and Teo has a mission. Armed with their guitar and harmonica, they took over Mam Lita’s students while the volunteer teacher has something to attend to. A simple “chore” turned into a nightmare when the children started crying. What would Gadong and Teo do?
This is one heart warming story even adults will love. If the story of being a volunteer teacher doesnt hit you, then I dont know what will. This will be a great way to tell our kids the sacrifices of being a teacher and the joy of volunteering. A story like this should get an award. Kudos to Ms. Grace and Ms. Beth!

Book Review: Oh Mateo! Big Eyes, Small Eyes by Grace D. Chong and Beth Parrocha Doctolero

In “Big Eyes, Small Eyes” Teo met a balikbayan, Perlas, a girl with big eyes, who is eager to see their farm. For Mateo this will be a bore but little did he knew that Perlas will bring out the fun as she draws out the the extraordinary from this ordinary farm.

From the jeepney to the farm animals Mateo helped Perlas explore the things she hasnt see in England. Then in return Perlas helped Mateo rediscover the farm in a very special way.

This book was a surprise to me like I’m focusing on one object using two different lenses. Enjoy reading this with Ms. Beth’s artwork. All in all, this book makes me want to say Perlas favorite line: “Cool!”

Book Review: Not By Sight by Jon Bloom

I have been following the Desiring God blog for years now and all I can say that this is one amazing blog. You can read astounding articles in a regular basis which is truly great. Their blogging team is superb. But as you can see, many of us doesnt seem to look forward to articles on Desiring God not written by John Piper. Well I enjoy Tony Reinke’s article however John Piper is always a must read. But that changed when I checked Jon Bloom’s book “Not by Sight”. It was published by OMFLIt here in the Philippines and was launch last September at the Manila International Book Fair however I wasnt interested on the book. Yet recently, I gave ‘Not by Sight” a try and I wasnt disappointed with it.
Every chapter (or devotional entry if you want call it that way) of “Not By Sight” contains a biographic sketch and the biblical lesson. The bio sketch are bite size historical fiction that unveals the essential background of every character. The lesson are brief yet powerful to focus you to the all sufficient God. The bio sketch and the lesson are like two diamonds that are glittering in this book. Both can stand alone but the chapter shines brightest because of these well written parts. This proves that you dont need alot of words to have a spiritual banquet. You can feast on the goodness of God in every short chapter of Jon Bloom’s book.

If you’re using this as part of your morning devotional, you’ll definately look forward every morning for the entries. Wake up to meet James, Joseph, Peter, Martha and the other biblical characters as they walk in faith in different situations that you and I faces.

Notable quotes:
“God will not spare us from all awkward and painful decisions. Neither will he spare us from all wrong decisions resulting from our fallen finiteness, even if they are made in the integrity of our hearts. God has his purposes in all of these. But what we can trust him to do is faithfully give us the correction and guidance we need at the time he deems right.”
“Trusting in Jesus and his word over our perceptions is difficult to learn. That’s why the Lord takes us through so many different faith-testing, faith-building experiences. And when he does, it is never for just our own benefit. He’s displaying his power so others’ faith will be strengthened too.”
“So when you find yourself suddenly moving in a direction you had not planned, take heart; the Great Planner has something much better in mind for you and countless others.”
“When the storms of life hit, they almost always appear stronger to us than God’s Word. It is crucial for us to remember that our perceptions can be deceptive. When circumstances strike fear into our hearts, the question we must ask ourselves is, where is your faith? What God wants is for you to trust what he says over what you see.”
Uplifting and encouraging, “Not By Sight” is a must read for every believer. Powerful for those who are going through rough times. Insightful for those who just need some reminder that God is there for them. Get “Not by Sight” at your nearest Christian bookstores or download the PDF format here for free: http://bit.ly/1C8olo2.
