A story that is so near to the heart of every Filipinos who experience typhoon. Yani and his family depicts how Pinoys going through the storm and how they survive with hope in their hearts. Tito Dok didnt just gave a informative guide for kids (and adults) in preparing for the bad weather but injects suspense which makes this book a page turner. Jether Amar captured the drama as he renders his talent in this book.

Kids will be challenged with this book as they learn to prepare for a typhoon and see what they can expect in the aftermath. Holding on to God in the midst of a calamity is also highlighted in this book.

Teachers Can Make an Impact
I once read a T-Shirt that somewhat reads “Teacher’s Makes Impact to a Student for Eternity”. Indeed, teachers does have that ability. They are the ones that build up a person that will also make an impact to others. Do you remember your teachers in elementary and high school? What kind of teachers do you remember that really did influenced you? Is he the kind one or the terror you dont want to attend the class? Who every he or she is, you should be thankful because of that teacher, you were able to read this article.
Speaking of teachers, Galatians 3:24 states that the law (specially the 10 Commandments) is a teacher (schoolmaster or tutor in other Bible translations) that leads us to Christ. Without this law we will not know that we sin against God (Romans 7: 7-13). Have we examined ourselves in the light of the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20). Are you good enough for heaven? Have you lied? Took something that doesnt belong to you? You’re a thief if you have done that. Have you been angry with someone? According to Matthew 5, Jesus says thats murder. Thats only 3 of the 10 Commandments which is enough for God to punish us. And the punishment of our sins is eternity in hell.
The 10 Commandments of God serves as a mirror to see our filthiness (sins) and it also says that we should come to Jesus to wash us clean. God is holy and we cannot come to Him because of our sins. But being merciful, God made a way so that we can come to Him by sending Jesus Christ to save us (Juan 3:16). Doing good works, being charitable, having baptized and being a member of a church wont make us righteous to God. If we insist in doing that to be accepted by God, we are like a criminal trying to bribe a good judge. Only through the blood of Jesus Christ he shed in Calvary can wash our sins. Why not repent and trust in Jesus today (Efeso 2:8-9, Romans 10:13) and receive His free gift of salvation? Call on Him today and He will save you.

God Loves Children!

Do you know that children has a special place in God’s Kingdom?

“But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.”
Mark 10:14-16

And thats why salvation is not only open for grown ups who will have child-like faith, but to children also. Paul sets Timothy as an example:

“and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.”
2 Timothy 3:15

So how do the sacred writings (the Bible) leads us to salvation?

Do you know that the law specifically the 10 Commandments (which is in the Bible) is our schoolmaster (guardian, tutor, guide) that will lead us to Christ?

“Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.”
Galatians 3:24-25 (KJV)

In Bible times, children were assisted by a schoolmaster to school till they reach puberty. Like wise, the law or the 10 Commandments assist us come to Christ by telling us that we have shortcomings with God. The Bible calls it “sin”:

“Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.”
Romans 3:19-20

Are you a good person?

Examine yourself by the 10 Commandments (check Exodus 20) . Have you ever lied? Have you been angry lately? Have you used God’s name in vain? Have you look at someone with lust? Have you stolen anything? If you admit that you have done those things, then the Bible declares you guilty:

“For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it.”
James 2:10

“as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God.
All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
Romans 3:10-12

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
Romans 3:23

God is holy (Isaiah 6:3, 2 Cron. 6:18), He is just (Psa. 139:9, Dan. 4:35) and He will punish those who sin in Hell (Mark 9:48, Rev. 14:11). According to the Bible, it is an abomination to justify the wicked (Prov. 17:15). Justice needs to be met. Thats why God is also rich in mercy thatHe send His Son, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, to live a sinless life and to die for your sin:

“For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”
Romans 5:10-11

“For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.”
Romans 5:6 (KJV)

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 6:23 (KJV)

Ask for God to grant you repentance and faith (Acts 11:8), ask for mercy (Psa. 41:4) and He promise that anyone who comes to Him, He will not reject (John 6:37, Romans 10:13). He will save you not by your good works or religious deeds but by faith through Jesus Christ:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-9

“and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”
Romans 3:24-26

Jesus died, was buried and 3 days later risen to defeat death. You must repent (turn away from your sins) and believe in Christ:

“From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Matthew 4:17

“and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Mark 1:15

“The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,”
Acts 17:30

When you accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior by faith, you will become a child of God:

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,”
John 1:12

Do it today. You may not have tomorrow:

“For he says, “In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”
Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”
2 Corinthians 6:2

If you repent and believe Christ, He will transform you:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
2 Corinthians 5:17

As a child of God you are to walk in His will:

“for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.”
Ephesians 5:8

As a new born in Christ, desire to grow:

“Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—”
1 Peter 2:2

Cultivate your love for Christ by :

1. Reading the Bible
2. Having a prayer life
3. Being baptized and attending a Bible preaching church
4. Sharing the gospel of Christ

“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.”
Galatians 3:26 (KJV)

Day 11: Yakkk, Bulutong-Tubig by Luis P. Gatmaitan, M. D. and Mark Ramsel Salvatus III

Yuck indeed! Tito Dok didnt pull punches in discussing some of the yucky subject this side of health. He did that in some books included in this series. The subject is thoroughly discussed not just in a delightful story of Jaycee having chicken pox but the Q and A part. Meanwhile the story is well crafted. You can feel what Jaycee feels as she deals with chicken pox and not being able to go out of the house because she is sick. The book ends with dad having….just read the book.

Day 3: May Giyera sa Katawan ni Mark by Luis P. Gatmaitan, M. D. and Ariel Santillan

Tito Dok explains well, in this book that their are things that are happening in a kids body. He shares need for kids to “fight back” by having vaccination. Vaccination for children is a nightmare (yikes those needles!) but with this book it will help them see the importance of having one for their health.

The One Who Flew over The Adarna House?

How about a 15 minute bliss of children’s book? I came to the Adarna House “Book Sale and Book Signing” last December 7, pass 4 o clock.

The Adarna House showroom is a small place. Well to have 30 illustrator and writers jam pack plus horde of customers in that place will be standing room only. But there are a good amount of people inside and I said to myself that I can avail the freebies.

Since this is a 15 minute fiasco, I have to get the discounted book and avail of my freebies (the “Ang Pambihirang Buhok ni Raquel” limited edition notebook is cool). I browse over shelf after shelf. Look over the writers and artist as they accommodate their fans and chatting away the time among their colleagues . So I check out the writers and illustrators name tag, I can’t find it on the display shelves. So I realize that I have to go to the counter and ask the clerk for the books I’m looking for. The last one that caught my eye was the one I inquire to the counter. He was a jolly guy and I think its fun reading his stuff. And it was a sovereign thing from God (which I thought later). I told the clerk ” What books by Luis Gatmaitan do you carry?” To which she replied “Ang Pambirang Buhok ni Raquel and Ang Ambisyosong Istetiskop, Sir.” So I ask for 2 copies of “Buhok ni Raquel” and 1 copy of “Istetiskop”. Then in exchange she gave a food stub and the limited edition notebook. Because my time is short, I proceed to get the books signed.

So I interrupted (politely) Dr. Luis among his colleagues. He warmly gave me a hand shake. Then at that point I realized that I know Luis Gatmaitan over Facebook. As Tito Dok was signing the books I break the silence by striking a conversation:

“Your are Christian, right?”

“Yes I’m” he said “I use to host a radio program over DZAS.”

“What church do you worship?”

“I go to a Christian group now but I use to go to a independent Methodist church. And you?”

“I worship at a Baptist church in Batangas. I’m also a preacher.”

He ask “Are you a pastor?”

“I’m not a pastor Tito Dok. Still praying for God’s will for that matter.”

I added “Children’s book looks easy and simple to produce book but I read somewhere that its hard to write or even to penetrate to the market. Is that true Tito Dok?”

“Well Yes. You have to consider many things like the culture, psychology, language etc.”

“Doesn’t Adarna House publish Christian books?”

He affirms “Yes but its a different group. But OMF has Hiyas which publishes children’s book with a Christian bent. I also have books published under Hiyas.”

“I know Hiyas, Tito Dok. Do you know Robert Magnuson and Marlene Legaspi Munar?”

“Yes I do. They are from OMF.” He smiles broadly. Then we had our picture and that moment was so amazing meeting well recognized author. It took a while to sink in to me.

Before I took flight to the final itinerary, I indulged with the free hotdogs, tacos, buttered corn, ice cream and sago’t gulaman as treats for the first 100 people coming to the event. Yummy! And all that under 15 minutes!
