Describing the Precious Gift Part 4

Standard

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (John 1:12 KJV)

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:6, 7 KJV)

To recap our lesson titled “Describing the Precious Gift”, here again are the three points of our lesson:

1.) What the gift says about us the receiver (we are sons of God).
2.) What manner the gift was received (by faith).
3.) How the gift set us apart from others.

Conclusion:

Believers, realizing how precious is the gift isnt that enough to follow and obey Christ?

Dear readers, if you dont have Christ as Lord and personal Savior, you do not possess Christ. Let me give you verses in the Bible for you to ponder:

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:6, 7 KJV)

He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. (John 1:10, 11 KJV)

But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cæsar. (John 19:15 KJV)

As you can see, from birth to death no one wants this precious gift. Will you accept Him today? Repent and believe the gospel!

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (John 1:12 KJV)

Book Review + Bonus Videos: Resisting Gossip Together by Matt Mitchell

Standard

Just when you think Matt Mitchell delivered a great book titled “Resisting Gossip”, which could be enough for us for the topic of gossip, he then gives us a sort of sequel (and much more) with “Resisting Gossip Together”. This book is a participant’s guide and a Bible study companion of his first book and the video series. “Resisting Gossip Together” is intended to dig deeper on the topic of gossip.

The book is, as I have said, a great compliment book. As I flip though the pages, it’s also a stand-alone book. Take the first book and the video series out, you will still benefit from this book. but you have to sweat (not much) by having a pen and a Bible on hand.

If you ask me if I need to buy “Resisting Gossip Together” after having “Resisting Gossip”, my answer is yes. Yes because of its value to a group study of the subject of gossip. It helps you to navigate on facilitating it. It does also assist you to make use of other online resources on Matt’s blog to further enhance the group study. Another thing is how indispensible it will be on your personal study.

After munching on “Resisting Gossip” get  “Resisting Gossip Together”. Both are valuable books on gossip and having both of the books is a powerhouse.

As added bonus to this book review, here are the video series of “Resisting Gossip”….

Book Review: Transforming Households by Alfonso G. Pablo, Sr.

Standard

photo grabbed from CLC Karuhatan Facebook

Met the author on his book launch last September, I remember briefly talking to him. A mild mannered fellow, I falsely assumed that he won’t write a book that goes beyond the usual Christian book. But looks can be deceiving! As I check his second book, “Transforming Household”, Alfonso G. Pablo, Sr is top caliber author and we need such writers with a vision to apply biblical foundation for the Filipino family.

“Transforming Household” is a book that you won’t ignore. Definitive and comprehensive it can outshines its foreign counterparts. This is a living testimony that a book about engaging the family with Jesus in a Pinoy setting is possible. Complete with charts and graphs and a runaway content, every Christian should watch out for this author as he serves more books in the coming year.

Something for the pastor and the church to consider, “Transforming Household” it is a must read. The book might be a bit bulky but its content is meaty. Brimful of wise and practical advice, its passion to bring the Pinoy family to the true biblical pattern can be truly felt in every page.

Describing the Precious Gift Part 3

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (John 1:12 KJV)

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:6, 7 KJV)

The third thing that convey how precious this gift is:

3.) How the gift set us apart from others. “…to them gave he power”. I wonder how will you feel when youre the only one in the group who hasn’t received a Christmas present? By now you might be upset while your friends are enjoying the gift. The gift that is Christ sets us apart from others. On this side is the redeemed ones of God while on the other side is the unregenerated ones. We are the saved sinners that obtained the present from heaven, while the rest are unrepentant sinners who are without the gift. We Christians have a right, privilege, benefit, and advantage because of the preciousness of Christ. The rest of mankind, without the promises of Christ and are hell bound while we believers received the precious gift and the promises God committed to his child.

Christians, are we committed to flaunt this precious gift to the world to win them to Christ, that they may also partake the privileges of having Christ?

Describing the Precious Gift Part 2

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (John 1:12 KJV)

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:6, 7 KJV)

The second indicator that describe the preciousness of the gift that is Christ Jesus:

2.) What manner the gift was received. How did we received Christ? By faith alone (Eph. 2:8-9). John 1:12 states “even to them that believe”. Faith is the precious agent that receives the gift. Not only in receiving it but in making much of the gift as we honor God with it and show it to this fallen world. Why faith? Here are two reasons:

a.) because God requires it.

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6 KJV)

b.) faith is powerful. Read the whole chapter of Hebrews 11, and see how the believers of the Old Testament went through fiery trials. Without faith in God it will be impossible to journey to this life. Lets check Hebrews 11: 33-34 to view an example on how faith is indeed powerful:

Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

Christians, having receive the precious gift are we living in faith as we walk with God in this life?

Describing the Precious Gift Part 1

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (John 1:12 KJV)

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:6, 7 KJV)

This Christmas we will be giving and receiving gifts. But I hope and pray that you already received the precious gift that God gave to us, that is Jesus Christ. Everyone knows that he is the reason for Christmas. He is the ultimate Christmas gift. That is common knowledge to everyone who is a Christian. But their is something about this precious gift that we should know. What I mean is why is He a precious gift. In this study, I want us to look at the three indicators that describe our precious gift. Knowing these will give a deeper appreciation for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,Looking at our text, we see our first indicator:

1.) What the gift says about us the receiver. John 1:12 “sons of God”. You know sometimes the gift speaks who the person will receive it. In giving a gift, we must know the need or want of the person. What best describe this person is somewhat a factor in deciding what gift will fit for this person. Sometimes we have this themed gift for our Christmas fellowship like “something sweet” or “something cute”. We are according to the verse are sons of God. Those who accepted Christ becomes precious also not because we are fit enough to receive the gift but because Christ is precious. The gift is precious itself. Jesus is the son of God. He is also the first born of every believer. Therefore, we became the redeemed ones.

We are important to God. We are elected by God for Christ. We are sinners made holy. When we possess Christ, we doesnt just possess Him. We possess Christ and He gave us a position, sons of God.

Christians, knowing that we are sons of God because of Jesus, are you living the life that magnifies the precious gift?
