Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the Lord. Then spake Haggai the Lord’s messenger in the Lord’s message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith the Lord. And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the Lord of hosts, their God, (Haggai 1:12-14 KJV)
Do you know how to have a successful church and ministry life? We need unity. Not just unity in terms that their is something to be done but in terms of who is in control of our unity. We need a God-driven unity for our church to move forward and grow. Looking at our text we can see how God can show us believers what it means to have this kind of unity. Before we can harness this we should know our part. Like in the story, the main characters are Zerubbabel the governor, Joshua the high priest and the remnant. They want to accomplish what God wants them to do. That is to rebuilt the temple of God. Church, what are trying to accomplish? Is it a building project, a goal to win more souls or send out a mission team? What ever it is does it have a God-driven unity to finish the task.
So how do we cultivate a God-driven unity among Christians? We have four under two important character for harnessing this unity:
1.) Obedience – we read in verse 12 that they obey the Lord’s voice through his messenger. We need to be obedience to what God wants us to do. He is the one who will reveal the things to accomplish and therefore we need to give heed to what He wills us. Anothe key to obey is “faith”. Do we have faith that our unity will come to pass? Do we have faith enough to go forth and be of use to God?
2.) Reverence – holy fear to God. “Lord their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the Lord…” Do we really obey, prove our loyalty and highly esteem God? The CEV version renders it “and they started showing proper respect for the God.” If we are showing proper respect to God and lets add, our church leaders, we will desire a unity that is anointed by God. If we are not looking for it sadly we are not giving proper respect to God and the ministers of the church. God made the church as a unifying body of believers to accomplish godly task.
A Jerubbabel cant accomplish it alone. A Joshua cant finish it as a loner. A remnant cant do it all by themselves without a leader. We they need each other to rebuilt the temple. How much more to us as a church. We need each other to reach a goal. We need a God-driven unity.
